Purchase Protection
Understand how purchase protection covers damaged and stolen items bought with your card.
- •Covers damage and theft for items purchased with your card (90-120 day window)
- •Most cards do NOT cover lost items—only stolen (with police report) or damaged
- •Per-item limits typically $500-$10,000 depending on card tier
- •Jewelry, watches, and electronics often have lower sublimits ($500)
- •Must file police report within 48 hours for theft claims
Benefit terms and coverage may vary. Always verify details with your card issuer before filing a claim. Information shown may not reflect recent changes to your card's benefits.
How Purchase Protection Works
Purchase protection reimburses you when eligible items purchased with your card are damaged or stolen within a coverage window (typically 90-120 days from purchase). This supplements manufacturer warranties by covering accidental damage and theft—events warranties don't cover.
What's Covered
- •Accidental damage (drops, spills, cracks)
- •Theft with police report filed within 48 hours
- •Fire or natural disaster damage
- •Vandalism
- •Electronics (phones, laptops, tablets, cameras—subject to sublimits)
- •Clothing and accessories
- •Home goods and appliances
- •Manufacturer-refurbished items (on select cards like Amex)
What's NOT Covered
- •Lost items (most cards exclude items that simply disappeared)
- •Motor vehicles, boats, and their parts
- •Cash, travelers checks, and tickets
- •Jewelry and watches (often capped at $500-$1,000 per item)
- •Used or secondhand items (except manufacturer-refurbished)
- •Items purchased for resale or commercial use
- •Normal wear and tear or gradual deterioration
- •Items left unattended in public places
- •Computer software and digital downloads
- •Animals, plants, and perishables
Why Claims Get Denied
- •Item was lost, not stolen—purchase protection requires theft (with police report) or damage
- •Didn't file police report within 48 hours for theft claims
- •Item is in excluded category (jewelry over sublimit, vehicles, used goods)
- •Didn't notify card issuer within deadline (30-60 days)
- •Insufficient documentation—missing original receipt or photos of damage
- •Didn't file with primary insurance first (homeowners/renters if applicable)
- •Damage from normal wear and tear, not accidental
- •Item purchased for business/resale purposes
Claim Basics
- •For theft: file police report within 48 hours with detailed item description
- •Notify card's benefit administrator within 30-60 days of incident
- •Submit original receipt, photos of damage, and completed claim form
Exact claim steps and portals vary by issuer. Amex is known for fast processing (sometimes under 24 hours), while Chase/Citi use third-party administrators that may take longer.
Documentation Checklist
- •Original itemized receipt from retailer (showing item, price, date)
- •Credit card statement showing the purchase charge
- •Police report for theft (filed within 48 hours)
- •Clear photographs of damaged item from multiple angles
- •Repair estimate from qualified technician (if seeking repair)
- •Homeowners/renters insurance claim denial (if item exceeds your deductible)
- •Completed claim form from card issuer's benefit administrator
